In the Stillness was composed in March 2024. This piece was written as an homage to the COVID-19 pandemic and all of the loss we suffered from it. This work is also a reflection of a quote by Howard Thurman. He stated; “In the stillness of the quiet, if we listen, we can hear the whisper of the heart giving strength to weakness, courage to fear, hope to despair.” The COVID-19 Virus was one that was unexpected, and truly shattered the way we would function as humans forever. I think one thing that I, and I am sure the rest of the world remembers, is the silence and the quiet. In that silence we found ourselves afraid, weak, and in despair. The world was truly hurt and we had no idea how we would ever come out on top of this virus, but in the stillness of the quiet we surpassed. Many people lost not only loved ones, but jobs, homes, and events that were special to them due to the pandemic. Now four years later, in the stillness of the quiet, I find strength instead of weakness, courage instead of fear, and hope instead of despair. This work is dedicated to all of those who experienced loss during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The World Premiere of this piece was on April 29th, 2024 by the Troy University Symphony Band in Troy, AL. The Troy Symphony Band was under the direction of De’Shun Iverson.
