Cascading Whirlwinds (Score Only)
The inspiration for the piece Cascading Whirlwinds came from the title itself. I had been wanting to use this title for a piece of music for a while, but had not found the right melody to accompany it. A friend and colleague, Tyler Shumate, approached me about composing a piece for a new clarinet quartet he had formed (Clarión Clarinet Quartet). I saw this as a challenging opportunity as I had never written for a clarinet quartet before and was working with four talented musicians. After some experimentation, I came up with an opening that featured flowing chords and moving harmony transitioning into 16th notes that created a falling sensation passed between the clarinets. The imagery and sounds reminded me of whirlwinds descending, leading me to decide on the title Cascading Whirlwinds for the piece.
